How Do I Know If God Is Speaking to Me?
Willow Creek | April 24, 2026

A lot of people have asked this question, even if they’ve never said it out loud:
How do I know if God is speaking to me?
Sometimes the question comes during prayer. Sometimes it comes after disappointment. Sometimes it shows up in the middle of a major life decision when you are desperate for direction and unsure what to trust.
Many people expect God’s guidance to feel dramatic. A sign. A voice. A moment so obvious that doubt disappears. But more often, discernment comes through learning a familiar voice rather than decoding a mystery.
Here are four ways to think about it:
1. God’s voice will sound like God.
God will not lead you in a direction that is out of step with His character. He is not manipulative, cruel, dishonest, or chaotic. If what you are sensing pulls you toward pride, panic, or compromise, slow down.
2. God’s guidance is not detached from Scripture.
One of the clearest ways we learn God’s heart is through what He has already said. The more familiar you are with His character, His Word, and His ways, the easier it will become to recognize what fits and what does not.
3. God often confirms direction in community.
Discernment is healthier when it’s not isolated. Wise counsel matters. Mature believers, pastors, mentors, and trusted friends can help you test what you are sensing to avoid reacting to emotion.
4. God typically gives enough light for the next step, not the whole map.
This is where many of us struggle. We want a complete blueprint. But often God builds trust one step at a time. He may not answer every question at once. He may simply show you what obedience looks like today.Discerning God’s voice usually isn’t effortless—it comes with practice. This series, God, is that You? helps provide the framework for making decisions and learning God’s voice.
