How to Make a Big Decision Without Regret

Willow Creek | April 24, 2026

Big decisions have a way of making life feel heavy.

A job offer. A breakup. A move. A college major. A conversation you can’t avoid. Most of the time, the root of the stress doesn’t come from the options in front of us. Rather, it comes from the fear of making the wrong choice.

That fear can make us freeze. We overthink and replay every scenario. We wait for perfect certainty before we act. But real life hardly ever hands us perfect certainty. More often, it asks us to move forward with wisdom.

Here are five ways to make a big decision without regret.

1. Start with what matters most.
Before you ask which option looks best, ask what kind of person you want to become. A decision is never only about where you will end up. It is also about who you are becoming in the process.

2. Be honest about what fear is doing.
Fear can disguise itself as wisdom. Sometimes we say we are “being careful” when truthfully we are just scared. Naming that honestly can bring more clarity than hours of spiraling.

3. Don’t decide alone.
Wise people invite wise voices into the process. Talk to someone mature, grounded, and honest. Not just someone who will confirm what you already want, but someone who will help you see clearly.

4. Stop waiting for the perfect sign.
Sometimes the reason we feel stuck is that we are waiting for all the fog to lift before we move. But clarity often comes while we are walking, not standing still.

5. Trust that God can guide a moving life.
You don’t need a secret code for your future. You need wisdom for your next step. It’s easier to steer a moving ship than one frozen in place. Sometimes it means taking the next faithful step before knowing all the details. If you are in a season of big decisions, you are not the only one. So many of us are asking the same question in different words: What am I supposed to do now? That is exactly why we are doing a series called God, is that You? on May 10, 17 & 24. If you’re looking for clarity, wisdom, and peace in the middle of real life, follow along each weekend as the series unpacks many common questions about hearing from and being in relationship with God.
