If Only You Knew…

When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
Psalm 8:3-4

Everyone has felt out of place and insecure at least once in their life. Imagine your first day at a new school. You wonder if you fit in or if you will have any friends or enemies. If you are like me, it was a little scary and exciting, confusing and exhausting. And for most people, you weren’t sure if you wanted to return the next day.

Now imagine if the principal of the school, whom you never met before, called you by name and took a personal interest in you. What if he assigned the vice principal to walk with you in the halls between classes, sit with you during lunch, play with you on the playground, and introduce you to other students who possibly could become friends. That would change everything. Suddenly the new school would not be scary. I bet you would even begin to enjoy school and look forward to each new day with the vice principal and the new friends he has introduced to you.

If you are honest, you would be asking yourself why is he interested in me? Why does he care about me? I am nobody. What about the other students? Does he care about them, too?

In essence, this is similar to what David was feeling when he wrote this psalm. Why is the Creator of all things interested in us and why does He seem to really care for us, entrusting people to look after His creation?

God wants people from all cultures and time periods to join Him to love and serve and enjoy our Creator just as family members in our world love, serve, and enjoy each other.

Knowing God and letting Him love you and you learning to love and please Him is foundational to a happy, joyful life that will never end. It is the most meaningful relationship we can have, and its blessings spill over into all areas of our life and beyond.

Next Steps

Praise and thank God that He first loved us, that He chases after us, and has called us into new life with Him.

Read Psalm 8 slowly, asking God to teach you whatever it is that He wants you to know.
