Worth More Than $42,000

The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head. Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all that nations drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been. But on Mount Zion will be deliverance; it will be holy, and Jacob will possess his inheritance.” Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the Lord’s.

Obadiah 15-17, 21

‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

In 2021, I fell victim to a wire fraud scam. Before I was supposed to close on my first home, I sent the down payment to who I thought was the real estate attorney. Long story short, she wasn’t the real real estate attorney, and I lost $42,000.

I so badly wanted the people who deceived me to be punished. How could they sleep at night, knowing they had taken so much from someone? Why did it have to be me they stole from? I walked closely with God and tried to follow a life modeled after him. Why was I being punished?

I fought for things to be made right—with the bank, the real estate attorney’s office… with God. But they weren’t made right. Not in the way I wanted them to be. Thankfully, my parents helped me get together another down payment, but all that money was still gone and in the hands of a criminal who got away.

Unfathomable things happen on earth that we may never see made right. Not on our timeline, but in God’s, they will be. He is coming back one day. The righteous will be raised up to live with him forever, and all people will be judged.

We can’t make that judgment ourselves, but we know God will be fair and just. Believers will spend eternity in heaven with Jesus. He will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more sorrow or pain.

Those against God and His people who do not repent will be punished. We can trust our God to do that. In the meantime, we can be confident our pain and oppressors haven’t gone unnoticed. God sees. He knows.

In the end, I regained about a fourth of the money I lost, with tens of thousands of dollars still out there in the hands of God knows who. But God knows whose hands are in control. His own. And we can trust those hands will be fair and just in the end.

Next Steps

  1. Are you holding on to any resentment from a situation? Lift the situation and people involved up in prayer. Ask God to help you let go and trust in him.
  2. Read Revelation 21:1-27. Which words or phrases stick out to you about the New Heaven and New Earth that is to come?
