Why Serving is Good for your Mental Health

Willow Creek | March 3, 2023

We know that others benefit when you volunteer, but did you know you could, too? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), volunteering can help you reduce stress, increase happiness, develop confidence, and find purpose. Not only that, discovering and using your spiritual gifts can connect you with God and others in new ways!

Lilly has been volunteering in HSM for 4 years, which has grown her faith and helped her see the ways God can use her to impact the lives of students. One of the gifts of serving has been the new friends she’s made.

“Serving at HSM has been a great way for me to grow in community,” says Lilly. “Making connections with students and fellow leaders brings extra joy into my life. I’ve met some of my best friends while serving!”

Evan spent her career in IT and, since retiring, realized she missed the daily connection with others. She started serving at Willow leading a small group and now helps our Next Steps team with initiatives like Rooted and Rebuild.

“In May of 2021, my husband, John, passed away unexpectedly,” says Evan. “I am so grateful for the love and support of my small group members, the REBUILD ministry, and my church family. Volunteering brings me joy and purpose. I’m so grateful God uses our heartfelt passions, talents, and experiences so we can participate in the life change I see happening in and through Willow.”
