Every Star Brightens the Sky
Dan Lovaglia, Camp Pastor, Camp Paradise | December 17, 2025

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Colossians 3:23-24
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Galatians 6:9-10
When was the last time you gazed at a sky full of stars? I get the privilege of serving in the woods all summer at Camp Paradise. Evening campfires are always special for campers, but even more so when the skies are clear. It doesn’t matter what’s happening around the fire circle, you can’t help but look up. Countless stars, of all shapes and sizes and distances from Earth, dot the sky. It’s easy to focus on the big ones, but what about the tiny ones? Sometimes I wonder if the little stars wish they were big stars. But then God reminds me, every star brightens the sky.
In the Christmas story, no-name Mary was shaken by the idea that she’d become Jesus’ mom and startled by the angel who told her so. Can you imagine being in her sandals that day? Luke 1:28 says, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Favored? By God? But I’m not even a little star. We typically devalue our own contribution in the shadows of more prominent people. I bet Mary figured the angel had the wrong address. Maybe someone from the high priest’s family, perhaps?
It’s a myth that you need to be a pastor, missionary, or non-profit leader to do something significant on God’s behalf. Mother Theresa famously said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Doing God’s work with Him and for Him comes in all forms. Colossians 3:23-24 and Galatians 6:9-10 are clear: “Whatever you do…do good to all people.” There’s no assignment from God that’s too tiny to reap a huge harvest. He purposefully calls people from all walks of life, wildly varied backgrounds, and the broadest spectrum of influence. We might think only the brightest stars matter, but in God’s family, every star brightens the sky. It’s time to bundle up! Go stargazing tonight and consider ways God wants you to serve.
Next Steps
Where does God have you spending most of your time these days? Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, line cook at a restaurant, bank teller, software engineer, small business owner, or something else, God places opportunities in front of you every day to serve Him and others.
Write down at least one way you can do something small for someone else today with God’s great love. Then, ask a friend to pray for them or join you.
