Who is Jesus?

Willow Creek | March 8, 2024

Who is Jesus? Messiah, Son of God, magician, or just a very clever human being? Was Christ even real? Can faith in Jesus be based on evidence? When you consider the very real impact that Jesus had on this world (did you know that early laws stemmed from His teachings?), it’s worth exploring who He was and what He claimed.

Perhaps you already know a thing or two, maybe about Him being born on Christmas and that He died on the cross, or maybe you don’t know anything–and that’s okay, too! Here’s a very brief answer to the question, Who is Jesus?: Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 3:17). He came to earth born as a baby (which we celebrate on Christmas–Luke 2:1-20), then grew up to die on the cross for all of our sins (Good Friday), and would ultimately resurrect from the dead on Easter.

What is Good Friday, and why is it “good?”

To go a little deeper, Christ is the Savior of humanity. As human beings, we do wrong and make mistakes and sin. We can’t help it; it’s our nature. The Bible tells us there is a price to pay for our wrongs (Romans 6:23). However, instead of paying the debt of our sins with our own lives, Jesus (God’s Son) loves us so much that He came to Earth and died for us on the cross as our substitute. To have eternal life, all we have to do is believe in Jesus, in what He did for us, and ask Him to forgive us of our sins (John 3:16).

This helpful video from the Alpha series explores these questions and the life and character of Jesus.

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done: Jesus loves you! He loves you so much that He came down from Heaven and died in your place. What’s just as incredible is that Christ wants to have a relationship with you
