Is There Life After Death?

Willow Creek | September 6, 2023

For as long as mankind has existed, people have asked the question: Is there life after death? While answers vary based on beliefs, Christians would say “yes!” The Bible gives us examples that provide comfort, assurance, and hope in the promise of an eternal journey beyond this life. Let’s unpack it a bit more:

At the heart of the Christian faith lies the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His sacrificial death and miraculous return to life demonstrate the hope of eternal life—life after death, for all who place their faith in Him. In 1 Corinthians 15:20, the apostle Paul said, “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” Jesus’ resurrection gives us hope as it confirms victory over death and offers the promise of everlasting life with God.

The Bible provides countless examples that help us imagine what heaven—and life after death—is like. In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells His followers, “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2). Essentially, He is saying, “This is not the end. There is life after death. There’s a place for you—and it’s with me.”

Similarly, in 2 Corinthians 5:1, Paul wrote, “For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.” We know that what we see and experience now is just a brief moment compared to eternity with God.

Revelation 21 gives us a glimpse into what this life after death looks like:

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Is there life after death? Yes, and it will look a lot like Earth as it was intended to be. There will be no death, pain, or crying. Bodies, relationships, and even our earth will be restored. Anxieties will be released, and fears will cease.

So, how do we get there? It’s actually quite easy: put your faith and trust in Jesus. There’s not a to-do list; you don’t have to be good enough, and you don’t have to pass a test at the end of your life. While Jesus was on the cross next to two criminals, one of them said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom,” to which Jesus responded, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:42–43).
