The Christmas season is so full of hustle and bustle, it can be easy to forget what Christmas is even about! So, what is the meaning of Christmas? Why do we celebrate Christmas? Christmas day is the day Christians have chosen to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ (Luke 2:7). The birth of Jesus is important to Christians because Jesus would grow up, die for the sins of the world on the cross (1 Peter 2:24), and conquer death through His resurrection (Hebrews 2:14-15), so any who believe in Him would be given eternal life (John 3:16).
That’s the answer stripped down to bare bones, but there is so much more to What is Christmas? To Christians, the Christmas season (the weeks leading up to Christmas) is a season of peace and joy which ultimately culminates on Christmas day through the birth of Jesus. During the Christmas season, churches and Christians alike make an effort to spread the good news of Christmas through volunteering, giving, and inviting others out to church (just to name a few ways).
Now, what is the meaning of Christmas? For Christians, Christmas is the ultimate day of hope. It’s the day Christians remember where God sent His only Son, Jesus, into the world. God showed He loved His people so much He sent Jesus to them to grow up and die for their sins; because of that, Christmas is not just a season of peace and joy, but of hope as well.
Jesus was born as a baby in Bethlehem, and you can find the entire Christmas story here: Matthew 1:18-2:18 and Luke 2:1-20.
