New Beginning

‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Revelation 21:4

“See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.”
Isaiah 65:17

But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:13

At one point in my career, I was a sales consultant for a home builder. I was the lucky one who sat in the model homes and walked customers through these beautifully decorated models. As part of our sales process, we were encouraged to ask why they were looking for a new home and what about their current home they would like to change. Commonly, home seekers wanted to buy brand new so they didn’t have to worry about the maintenance of an older home. They wanted to be the first to live in the home. Often, they would share stories of fixing something in their current home, only to have something else in the home end up in disrepair.

Most customers were enthusiastic as they entertained the idea of living in a home so brand new no one had used the cabinets, the appliances, or the flooring—and that new home smell, of course! Unlike a resale home, it wasn’t just brand new to them; it was brand new to this world. They felt the promise of a new beginning, and their excitement was palpable.

I remember one couple in particular who had just retired and purchased a single-story home close to their children and grandchildren. They wanted this new build so they could focus on their family and not worry about repairing their home at any point. The wife started tearing up as they were signing the contract. She quickly explained they had worked their entire lives for this moment, and she couldn’t stop the tears of relief, joy, and excitement.

I feel the same emotions when I imagine what Heaven will be like. Like the promise of living in a new home, the Bible promises Heaven will be a place where all things will be new. There, we will leave disrepair and despair in the past and experience a life free from pain, sadness, and mourning.  All things will be made new, and God’s endless love and righteousness will surround us. Like the retired couple diligently working throughout their lives to realize their dream come true, the promise of Heaven has guided me and given me the desire to learn more about how I can live my life on earth to experience God’s great promise.

Next Steps

Reflect on Paul’s words in Romans 8:18: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” Take a moment to pray for help in finding joy in your circumstances and find comfort that one day, you will be rewarded with eternal life in Heaven.
