The Practice

The Practice is an experimental gathering where we immerse ourselves in God’s dream for humanity, practice the historic disciplines that align us with His dream, and carry each other along the way. We are learning to live out Jesus’ teachings in the world.

Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.

Join us, Sundays at 6 p.m. in Willow Creek Chapel.

We seek to be:

  • Kingdom Minded: Through the scriptures, story, and worship, we want to join Jesus in healing and redeeming this world.
  • Practice Based: More of a spiritual gymnasium than classroom. The focus is on the practices and disciplines that form us into Christlikeness.
  • Ecumenical: Our desire is to be relentlessly committed to humbly learning from other Christian traditions and practices.
  • Eucharistic: Every gathering will culminate with communion to weekly anchor us in Christ’s death, resurrection, and promise of return.

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)

The Creator of the Universe is inviting us to lay down the burdens we’ve been carrying and join Him in healing and restoring the world.

Through Christ, in every moment of our lives, we can join God’s Movement or miss it. Or even fight against it. “The Kingdom of God is at hand”, Jesus taught over and over, and every moment is pregnant with the possibility of joining God’s redemptive action.

BUT if you’re like me, you have to admit how often you find yourselves consumed (and exhausted by) your own dreams. And then even when you realize this and decide to join God’s dream for the world, you quickly discover that you don’t have the tools or character or resources to do it. (Rom 7)

And so many of us choose one of two paths: (1) try harder and wear ourselves out, or (2) give up. But thankfully, Jesus offers us a third way. The easy yoke. The narrow road. What does He say?

“Come to ME…. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.”

This is what we want to give the next 18 months to. This is what we want to give our entire lives to: Learning from Jesus how to become the kinds of people who can join His revolution of overcoming evil with Good. It is only by Grace, but we all have an important part to play.

Join us as we learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
