The lazy days of summer aren’t a thing at Willow Creek’s bustling Care Center, according to Nicole Burt, Care Center director.
“Summer is as busy as ever,” she says. “We offer a huge assortment of services—a full-choice grocery store, children’s clothing, dental and vision care, employment services, legal aid, and more. Our strategy is two-fold: First we meet guests’ immediate needs, then we help them find long-term solutions so they can move toward a more sustainable future.”
What’s their secret?
Volunteers! “Our volunteers make all the difference,” says Nicole. “They’re the heart of our ministry. The Care Center serves nearly 13,000 families per year—that’s more than 1,000 families each week—and we couldn’t do it without our amazing volunteers who treat each guest with dignity and respect. Also,” she adds, “let’s just say our volunteers have a lot of fun! They make new friends and find community while serving together.”
Greatest current needs
“While we have openings in a variety of roles,” Nicole says, “we especially need volunteers in two areas: Kids Zone, our super-fun childcare area where kids can hang out while their parents receive services; and in our legal, vision, and dental clinics, where we need professionals who volunteer their expertise to help people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to these services.”
Test-drive before you buy
Not sure if being a Care Center volunteer is for you? Test-drive it first at their volunteer orientation, held twice each month.
“You can learn about the Care Center’s vision, the many roles we offer, and the services we provide,” Nicole says. “We invite you to be part of our incredible mission of ‘fighting poverty and injustice so that lives are transformed and Jesus is known.’ And have a little fun in the process.”
