Sunday, July 2 | A Love Better Than Life
Read today’s psalm as your prayer.
You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.
A Way to Cultivate Love This Week
Below is form of prayer that can help us cultivate lives of love by increasing our intimacy with Christ as we grow in awareness of God’s presence in our everyday lives. Try setting aside ten minutes each day to practice this discipline and see what God does!
- Take a deep breath and remember that you are in God’s loving presence.
- Review the last 24 hours with gratitude. As you look back, what are you thankful for?
- Now examine the last 24 hours and notice the moments you lived with a deep sense of love for God and for others? Now notice the moments you were living out of a sense of self-interest instead of love for others?
- As you examine your day, do any emotions stand out—positive or negative? Take time now to talk about those emotions with God and listen for God’s response.
Finally, look forward to the coming day. When do you think you’ll be tempted to act out of self-interest? When do you most hope to respond in love? Invite God into these moments.
