Friday, August 11 | We Have All We Need – Day 47
Read 2 Peter 1:3–9
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
Paul says we can live an increasingly godly life—one that reflects the fruit of the Spirit—as we increase our knowledge of Jesus Christ. This doesn’t really mean that if we know more facts about Jesus we will grow in goodness and gentleness and love. But Paul means that the more time we spend with Jesus, being still in His presence and drawing on Him as our source of life, the more we will be transformed. Plus, the more we practice the ways of Jesus—exercising patience, humility, self-control, and perseverance, among other things—the more like Him we will become. In other words, in Jesus and through the Holy Spirit, God has given us everything we need; we need only say yes, join in, and participate.
- What are the attributes of a “godly life”? Which of these attributes are you particularly looking to cultivate?
- What do you sense God inviting you to do to cultivate a godly life? Who are the people who might be able to support you in this?
God, thank You for every good and perfect gift You have given, particularly those gifts that enable me to become more like Jesus. Thank You that I can experience Jesus’ presence. Thank You that Your Holy Spirit guides and directs me. I long to be transformed, for every broken piece in me to be healed and made whole. Enable and empower me to practice the ways of Jesus so I can be a part of what You’re doing in the world. Amen.
