Thursday, August 10 | Be Alert and of Sober Mind – Day 46
Read 1 Peter 5:6–11
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
We all know from experience that our self-control lessens when we are tired, angry, emotionally triggered in some way, or lack clarity of mind for some other reason. And yet these times will come. So, what do we do to exercise self-control in the midst of these moments of weakness? Just recognizing that we are in a moment of weakness is the first step. Further, as much as possible, we may want to avoid significant or tense conversations. Finally, we can lean even more on God’s grace and guidance in these moments of weakness. We might pray something like, “God, I know I’m triggered and tired right now. Give me a spirit of humility and grant me the grace I need to be gracious and kind in this conversation.”
- Reflect back on your last seven or eight days. In what moments did you sense you were not at your best to have an important conversation? What were the factors that contributed to your not being at your best?
- What is a simple prayer you can have handy in your heart and mind to pray during moments of weakness so that you have the best chance of acting and speaking with kindness and grace?
God, give me insight into myself in moments when I’m tired, triggered, or anxious. Help me to see where I am weak and needing to protect against saying or doing something I’ll regret. Give me the strength to stay alert and stand firm so as not to give in to whatever Satan might tempt me to consider. Fill my mind with thoughts of You and turn my heart toward You in times of weakness. Amen.
