Sermon on the Mount: Day 9

I Am the Light of the World

Read John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
As we read in yesterday's passage, Jesus told His disciples, “You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). Today we read the words He used to describe Himself: I am the light of the world. Which is it? Are we, His disciples, the light of the world, or is He? Both! When we say yes to Jesus and accept His gift of forgiveness and grace, we become light as He is light. Our lives speak the life and truth and grace that God offers. We are no longer lost in spiritual darkness, but rather have been given life now and life eternal.

  • What does it mean that Jesus is the light of the world?
  • What does it mean for your life that Jesus is the light of the world?
  • Who do you know that needs light in their life? What do you sense God inviting you to do with the knowledge that Jesus is the light of the world?

God, give me eyes to see the world through Your eyes. Give me ears to hear where You're leading me. And may I be a light in this dark world today. Amen.
