Your Kingdom Come
Read Matthew 6:5–15
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“This, then, is how you should pray:
“ ‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
In our divisive, conflict-riddled world, nothing sounds better than God’s kingdom coming to earth. And that’s exactly what’s happening and what God has invited us to participate in. We began to get tastes and glimpses of God’s kingdom on earth when Jesus arrived here. He ushered in that kingdom and we live today in what many scholars call the “now and not-yet.” The kingdom of God is both here and not fully here. As we acknowledge Jesus’ kingship, live out His teachings, and surrender to the Spirit’s transformation of our hearts and minds, we live into the kingdom now.
- What vision of God’s kingdom do you have? Where does that vision come from?
- What glimpses or tastes of God’s kingdom have you experienced in your own life?
- What aspects of God’s kingdom are you longing for? What aspects of God’s kingdom are you fearful or confused about? What invitation do you sense God extending to you with regard to your longings, fears, or confusion?
Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who You are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best—
as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.
