A Mind Governed by the Spirit
Read Romans 8:5–11
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
How often do our minds wander off into areas we didn’t direct or decide? Without conscious thought, we are suddenly fixated on a negative experience, caught in judging the behavior of someone else, or tempted to act on a destructive impulse. If it were up to us in our own strength, we’d have little hope of living, other than by our flesh. Thankfully, we need not rely on our own strength. We can turn to the Spirit and ask for the Spirit’s guidance and transformation. Because the Spirit of Christ is in you, you have life and peace.
- What do you feel when you hear that, by the Spirit, you can have life and peace?
- What practices might you incorporate into your daily life to help turn your thoughts to life and peace instead of to the flesh?
- What invitation do you sense God extending to you through today’s passage?
God, I long to live by Your Spirit, in life and peace. I can hardly contain myself at the thought of it. Sometimes my thoughts take over without my consent. Help me subject every thought to You and Your goodness. Banish any destructive ideas that arise in me and replace them with thoughts that lead to life and to peace. Amen.
