A New Life
Read Acts 5:12–21
The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.
Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”
At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.
- What do you think the reaction of the apostles was when the angel told them to go stand in the temple courts to tell people about life in Christ, given that they had just been imprisoned as a result of their healing and teaching?
- Whether you’ve been a Christian for a long time or just recently became one, what are the markers for you of your new life in Christ? What more do you want God to change?
- Who do you know that reflects Christ’s character and love? What do you see in them that might help you as you seek to become more like Jesus?
Father, thank You for interrupting my old life and blessing me with the new life of now and the new life to come. I want to be different. I want to look at the world and what it cares about and worries over, and see that I am different. I want to be concerned about what Your eyes see, what Your heart desires, and whom You love. As I walk through my day, show me those things I hold onto like the world does, and help me to release them. You have unlimited goodness and are waiting to pour out Your blessing on me. Reset my heart and mind on this truth. Amen.
