Jesus Devotional: Day 4

This week we are focusing our eyes on Jesus and who He is. Colossians 1:15–20 includes a stunning description and so we’ll spend all week on its verses, concentrating on a different verse or phrase each day. May we come to understand as much as we are able, and experience as much as we can handle, the supremacy of Christ in all things.

In Jesus All Things Hold Together

Read the entire passage below slowly, taking in every word as much as possible. Then focus your attention on verse 17 only. Read it several times.

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

  • Jesus has always existed and He holds all things together, or sustains all things. What does it mean that Jesus sustains you? In what area of your life are you particularly grateful for the sustaining power and love of Jesus right now?

  • Throughout your day today when you get stuck, worried, afraid, frustrated, or even joyful and hopeful, try saying this phrase from verse 17 as a prayer of surrender, acknowledgement, and praise: “Jesus, You are before all things—everything I see and everything I don’t see. And in You, Jesus, all things hold together.”

A Prayer for Today

Jesus, You are before all things, and in You all things hold together. Remind me of this truth today.
