This week we are focusing our eyes on Jesus and who He is. Colossians 1:15–20 includes a stunning description and so we’ll spend all week on its verses, concentrating on a different verse or phrase each day. May we come to understand as much as we are able, and experience as much as we can handle, the supremacy of Christ in all things.
All Things Have Been Created Through Jesus and For Jesus
Read the entire passage below slowly, taking in every word as much as possible. Then focus your attention on the second part of verse 16 only. Read it several times.
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
- Start with yourself and consider the truth that you were created for Jesus. What does that mean? What impact does that have on what you do today? Now consider the people in your family. What does it mean that they were each created for Jesus? What impact does that truth have on how you view those individual people in your family? Now bring to mind someone who has hurt you recently. How might the truth that that person was created for Jesus impact your heart or willingness to forgive?
- Throughout your day today when you get stuck, worried, afraid, frustrated, or even joyful and hopeful, try saying this phrase from verse 16 as a prayer of surrender, acknowledgement, and praise: “Jesus, all things—everything I see and all that I don’t—were created through You and for You. I was created for You.”
A Prayer for Today
Jesus, all things—everything in heaven and everything on earth; everything I see and everything I don’t—have been created through You and for You. Remind me of this truth today.
