God Shows Favor to the Humble
Read 1 Peter 5:5–6
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
Humility is one of those characteristics we value highly in others, but struggle to incorporate well into our own lives. Humbleness challenges cultural pressure to be ambitious and to continuously and fervently strive to achieve our goals and purposes in our workplaces and communities. What if we worried less about our own position and more about serving those around us well? What if we spent more time lifting up and encouraging others than trying to figure out how we can get ahead? This would certainly be countercultural!
- Who is the most humble person you know? How does that humility show?
- In what area of your life do you struggle with humility the most? Why do you think that is? What desire underlies your inability to act with humility in that area?
- What is God seeking to draw your attention to through today’s passage?
God, thank You for the example of Jesus and the way He clothed Himself with humility. I long to be more others-focused and to encourage the success and growth of those around me. And yet I can be selfish and concerned only about my own achievements. Give me opportunities to exercise humility and the courage to trust that You have me where I should be. Help me to use the influence I have to serve others. Amen.
