You Have Returned to the Overseer of Your Soul
Read 1 Peter 2:23–25
When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
What a line: “You have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls”! This truth can bring such healing and comfort if we can only receive it. We all know how poorly we oversee and guide our own souls—we exhaust ourselves, take the wrong paths, grow in selfishness, and drift into coping mechanisms that don’t actually help or heal in the long run. May we learn to entrust ourselves—as Jesus did—to God in every circumstance and every season.
- Sit quietly and reflect on the truth that in Christ, you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your soul. What comes to mind as you reflect?
- How well are you entrusting your life to God right now? In what areas are you struggling? Where do you sense fear or anxiety taking over your thoughts? What is your prayer?
- What is God seeking to draw your attention to through today’s passage?
God, thank You for the gift of Your love and care. How often I try to do things on my own, or take on more responsibility than I need to! I long to surrender my full self to You, to entrust every part of my life to Your care. Grow my trust and fill my soul with a desire to surrender to You. Thank You for loving me. Amen.
