God Lives and Breathes in You
Read Romans 8:9–11 (MSG)
But if God himself has taken up residence in your life, you can hardly be thinking more of yourself than of him. Anyone, of course, who has not welcomed this invisible but clearly present God, the Spirit of Christ, won’t know what we’re talking about. But for you who welcome him, in whom he dwells—even though you still experience all the limitations of sin—you yourself experience life on God’s terms. It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s!
Have you ever considered how amazing it is that the God of all things—the God who created the universe, the earth, the butterfly, the human eyeball—dwells within you and desires to bring you to your fullest life? This God, who raised Jesus from death to life, wants and works to lead you from decisions that are selfish, fearful, deceptive, or simply limited to those that are others-centered, free, truthful, and expansive! In other words, through Christ, God will raise you to life again after death, but He also wants to enliven you now on earth, in your current job, family, friend circle, and community. His Spirit can animate and guide you now.
- Reflect on a current or recent conflict you faced. What would resolution of that conflict look like on “God’s terms”? What would resolution look like on human terms? What enables you to resolve conflicts on God’s terms?
- Under what circumstances do you typically make your most selfish choices or decisions? Under what circumstances do you make others-centered decisions and choices? What accounts for the difference?
- In what area of your life do you especially need the animating, life-giving power of God right now? Ask God to help you see how to join up with that power.
God, thank You for Jesus and the fact that in and through Him, I am able to live by Your animating Spirit. Help me see how to open myself more and respond better to the ways You guide and lead me. Move my heart toward love so that I can love others well and make decisions and choices that match up with all You’re wanting to do in and through me. Amen.
