God's Love: Day 5

He Gave His Son

Read John 3:16–21 (MSG)

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.

“This is the crisis we’re in: God-light streamed into the world, but men and women everywhere ran for the darkness. They went for the darkness because they were not really interested in pleasing God. Everyone who makes a practice of doing evil, addicted to denial and illusion, hates God-light and won’t come near it, fearing a painful exposure. But anyone working and living in truth and reality welcomes God-light so the work can be seen for the God-work it is.”

Reflect

How do we know God loves us? “Because the Bible says so,” many would say. Well, yes. But more importantly, because God gave His Son for the sake of the world. This act was and is God’s ultimate act of love. So, if we ever doubt the love of God, we need only look to the truth that Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth to rescue the world and put it right again. But of course, just like every other human being over the course of time, each of us is tempted to run away from the God-light and into darkness. Our brokenness takes over and we fear the exposure that the light brings. The more we live in the light, though, the more we long to live in the light.

  • In what circumstances do you tend to doubt God’s love for you or for this world?

  • Reflect on the ways you shield yourself from the light of God and move toward darkness. What’s going on in your heart and mind when you do this?

  • How do you sense God inviting you to work and live in the truth and reality? What resistance do you feel to that invitation?

Respond

God, thank You for sending Jesus to rescue the world and restore all things. Help me remember that this act is the ultimate sign of Your love for the world and for me. I want to live in the light, my soul longs for complete wholeness. In Your light I know I am safe, loved, and being transformed to look more like Jesus. Show me how to work and live and breathe in the truth and reality. Amen.
