Celebration of Hope: Day 3

Quiet Waters

Read Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
If you’ve ever sat beside a quiet pond or slow-moving brook or river, you likely know the kind of peace and stillness that can penetrate a busy, frantic soul. There is something that can be especially calming about water. As we read in Psalm 23, it is into this peace and stillness God seeks to lead us. He desires that we live at peace not only with others, but also within ourselves. He desires to restore our souls so that we are unafraid, courageous, faith-filled, and able to love fully.

  • Reflect on an experience you’ve had on or near water in which your soul felt refreshed or restored. What do you think contributed to your feeling of peace and stillness?
  • What are the places or people that allow you to feel peace in the midst of a busy life? Try setting aside some time this week to seek out that place or person so that you can be open to God filling you with His peace and restoring your soul.
  • Each time you drink water today, say a prayer for those in the world who don’t have water. To make your prayer more specific, pick a country or location where water is scarce and pray specifically for the children in that place.

Father, thank You that You seek to fill me with Your peace, restore my soul, and lead me beside quiet waters. Remind me to put down my busyness, trust You more with every aspect of my life, and turn to You when I am feeling stress and fear. Show me how to lean into You more and experience Your presence regularly so that I can rest in Your love for me. Help me, in turn, be a carrier of Your peace to others. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
