You Did Not Believe My Words
Read Luke 1:19–22
The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
As we continue in Luke, we will come to the moment the angel Gabriel appears to Mary to give her some unbelievable news. Her reaction doesn’t initially seem very different from Zechariah’s, and yet, she doesn’t receive the same response. Zechariah apparently revealed something about his heart in his reaction to Gabriel that Mary didn’t share. He didn’t just doubt, he failed to believe. And so, his lips were sealed for at least nine months.
- What doubts do you wrestle with most often? What helps encourage you or strengthen your faith?
- Where do you need God to strengthen your faith? Spend two or three minutes contemplating this question, remembering you are in God’s loving presence.
Father, thank You for the faith You have given me. I pray that You would continue to strengthen me, fill me with the power of Your Spirit, and reveal Your presence as I go through my day. Where I have doubts, bring me comfort. Where I have unbelief, help me see and embrace the truth. Amen.
