Awestruck: Day 11

Why Am I So Favored?

Read Luke 1:39–45

At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Reflect

Elizabeth, who we know was barren and “very old” (Luke 1:7), through the Holy Spirit, speaks a beautiful blessing over Mary. Though she has experienced a miracle from God’s hand herself, she doesn’t focus on herself. Imagine the encouragement her words must have been. As an older woman, Elizabeth could have demanded the honor and service of Mary, but instead, she blesses Mary, speaks life into her, and believes herself favored to be in the young woman’s presence. What humility and grace!

  • Who has God placed in your life that blesses you and shows God’s favor upon you? Consider reaching out to that person to encourage them.

  • Reflect on whether there is a young person you know who you could bless with kindness and encouragement. Who came to mind? How can you bless them?

Response

Father, thank You for the people You have placed in my life who have spoken life into me, encouraged me, and challenged me. Open my eyes to those who are in that position now and give me the courage to thank them. And show me who I can bless and encourage through words and kindness today. Amen.
