Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller will support the Controller with various financial activities of the church, including monthly financial reporting, budgeting processes and variance analyses, the development and maintenance of robust accounting processes and internal controls, and preparation for Willow Creek's annual financial audit.



  • Work with Controller and CFO to compile monthly financial results and research/analyze actual-to-budget variances
  • Direct oversight responsibilities for the Accounts Payable and Purchasing activities
  • Work closely with the Senior Accountant and other Accounting and Finance managers to support a well-coordinated approach to Willow Creek's financial activities and reporting
  • Partner with all Willow Creek ministries to develop annual operating budgets
  • Review current procedures to identify ways to improve workflows and create automation, especially in the area of internal controls
  • Continually evaluate accounting software used by Willow Creek Accounting and Finance to ensure functionality stays abreast with current accounting requirements and technology
  • Lead and develop Accounting staff as assigned
  • Recruit, train and supervise volunteer teams


  • Minimum of 4 years experience in accounting
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting principles and legislation related to financial reporting
  • BS or BA in Accounting, CPA certification preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience as a "working manager" within a team preferred
  • Organizational agility that builds positive customer relationships and comfort in interacting with leadership at all levels and across all ministries
  • Excellent problem solving agility to identify potential issues, and develop and implement appropriate solutions
  • A keen eye for identifying process improvements, especially in the area of internal controls
  • Good working knowledge of computer software and applications, including database applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong team building and team development skills
  • Experience and skill in leading volunteers in an honoring, Christ-like manner
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong critical thinking skills with an analytical approach to Accounting
  • Spiritual gifts of leadership and administration
