For the Love of the Game
Serves and spikes. Hoops and huddles. Pitches and plays. What do they have to do with Christianity? They can be an open door for people to walk through and meet Jesus.
“Sports is an amazing platform for anybody to come and really feel a part of something,” said Greg Helle, who oversees the sports ministry at Willow Creek. “You can be an atheist, a Muslim, or a Christian, and you’re coming simply for the love of the game.”
A Sport for All Seasons
Willow’s sports ministry includes football, basketball, and volleyball, as well as summer golf outings and softball teams. Fall leagues begin in mid-September, and new players are welcome even after the first games tip off.
The leagues have a reputation for being run with excellence and offering great competition in a respectful atmosphere.
“It’s tons of fun,” says Greg. “There’s a sense of community. If you want to build relationships, it’s a great way for people to meet.”
More than a Game
But beyond the camaraderie and fun, there’s a higher purpose. Each week, Greg takes five minutes to share the gospel before the games begin.
“We’re unapologetic when it comes to our faith,” said Greg. “We’re here to share Jesus, then let’s play.”
All of the team captains are Christians, and as they get to know their players, they often point people to helpful resources. It might be a Monday Night Life workshop for someone going through a difficult time, a midweek class about spiritual matters of interest, or even a serving opportunity for someone who wants to reach out.
All Are Welcome
