Pitfalls to avoid in the Interview

Here’s just a few reasons most frequently given by employers as to why applicants, who are technically qualified for the position, are not hired:
  • Poor Personal Appearance. Lack of confidence, nervous or ill at ease.
  • Weak Handshake and/or failure to look the interviewer in the eye when speaking.
  • Lack of enthusiasm; passive or indifferent.
  • Late for the interview. Application sloppy or incomplete.
  • Over-emphasis on money or work hours; only interested in the best dollar offer.
  • Answered only yes/no to questions; poor self-expression.
  • Narrow job interests or lack of interest shown in the job discussed.
  • No questions asked about the job or company; emphasis on next higher position.
  • No personal career goals or career plans; condemns past employers.
  • Overbearing, too aggressive, conceited, know-it-all complex.
  • Poor voice diction or grammar.

Two ways you demonstrate your competency in an interview:

  1. Achievement Statements
  2. Personal Profile and "Elevator Speech"
Achievement statements summarize examples of KEY CONTRIBUTIONS you made in previous jobs. Each statement describes a:
  • Situation/Problem - a BRIEF description of what you addressed
  • Action - what steps you took to address the situation
  • Result - what QUANTITATIVE outcomes you achieved
